Trichocereus cordobensis ‘Helon’
Australian Collector Clone
Trichocereus cordobensis ‘Helon’ is a striking old Australian collector clone prized for its exceptionally broad, rounded ribs, heavy blue-green to grey-green coloration, and comparatively short spines. It develops an unusually stout, sculptural appearance as it matures, making it an especially interesting addition to a serious Trichocereus collection.
‘Helon’ is also known among collectors for occasionally producing unusual, irregular, or semi-monstrose growth. This characteristic is not expressed on every plant or cutting, so it should be considered an interesting possibility rather than a guarantee.
About ‘Helon’
‘Helon’ is an established Australian clone traditionally circulated under the name Trichocereus cordobensis. The clone has been propagated among collectors internationally for many years and has become recognizable for its distinctive morphology.
The name Trichocereus cordobensis itself has a somewhat complicated horticultural history. It is not best treated as an unquestioned modern species designation, and cordobensis-type plants have often been discussed in relation to Trichocereus scopulicola. For that reason, we preserve the established collector name ‘Helon’ rather than making unsupported claims about its exact botanical ancestry.
Appearance & Growth
One of the first things that stands out about ‘Helon’ is its exceptionally wide, rounded ribs. Mature stems can develop a very heavy, almost sculpted appearance, with deep grooves separating the broad ribs.
The epidermis commonly develops attractive blue-green, grey-green, or glaucous tones, particularly on mature growth. This muted coloration contrasts beautifully with the relatively small reddish-brown to amber spines.
Areoles are generally well spaced and carry a modest amount of wool. Compared with many other columnar Trichocereus, the spination is notably restrained, allowing the broad rib structure and epidermal coloration to remain the dominant features.
Occasional Monstrose Expression
One of the more unusual qualities associated with ‘Helon’ is its ability to occasionally produce irregular, lumpy, twisted, or semi-monstrose growth.
This trait can be unpredictable. Some plants may maintain completely normal columnar growth for years, while another section of the same clone may eventually begin producing unusual growth. A normal-looking cutting should therefore not be considered to have lost the characteristic.
For collectors, this possibility adds another layer of interest to an already distinctive clone.
What You'll Receive
Available material may include:
Tip Cuttings — vigorous growing tips selected from established plants.
Mid Cuttings — substantial sections suitable for rooting and establishing new plants.
Large Collector Cuts — larger-diameter sections selected for collectors looking for particularly robust specimens.
Because these are living plants and natural cuttings, exact dimensions, coloration, rib structure, and spination will vary from specimen to specimen.
Growing Information
‘Helon’ enjoys the same general growing conditions favored by vigorous columnar Trichocereus.
Provide bright light to full sun, acclimating plants gradually when moving them into stronger direct sunlight.
During active growth, water thoroughly and allow the growing medium to dry appropriately between waterings. A fast-draining cactus substrate is strongly recommended.
Reduce watering during cool winter conditions, particularly when plants are not actively growing. Excellent drainage and good airflow are especially important during periods of cold or prolonged damp weather.
With sufficient space and good growing conditions, ‘Helon’ can eventually develop into a substantial columnar specimen. Keep its mature width in mind when choosing a permanent planting location.
Rooting Fresh Cuttings
Fresh cuttings should be allowed to develop a complete, dry callus before planting.
Once properly callused, place the cutting into a dry, fast-draining cactus medium. Keep the cutting warm and provide bright, indirect light while roots begin developing. Water should be introduced gradually rather than keeping the rooting medium continuously wet.
Once established, plants can be transitioned into stronger light and a normal active-growth watering schedule.
Collector's Note
‘Helon’ is an excellent choice for collectors who appreciate unusual Trichocereus morphology. Its combination of massive rounded ribs, glaucous blue-green coloration, short spination, and occasional irregular growth makes it one of the more distinctive Australian collector clones in circulation.
This is a particularly rewarding plant to watch mature, as its character becomes increasingly pronounced as the column thickens.
